The human spinal column has 24 pre-sacral boney segments called vertebrae, which except for the top segment are separated by elastic discs. Between the vertebrae are openings called intervertebral foramina, which are created by the articulation of the vertebrae above and below it. Exiting from these intervertebral foramina are nerves which control many body functions, including the digestive, endocrine, vascular or circulatory, muscular, and respiratory or pulmonary systems. These nerves may also convey the sensation of pain. Accidents, falls, stress, tension, overexertion and other conditions often create displacements or derangement of the vertebrae with a resulting irritation and inflammation of the nerves.
